VESTAL, NY – Honors keep piling up for graduating students Dan Schaffer and Emily Mackay.
The pair of distance running stars won the America East Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards for the recent 2021-22 season. The honour, which is one per sport, is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievement.
This is the third time in her career that Mackay has been named an America East Sports Athlete Scholar. She was also the winner for the past two cross country seasons. Schaffer, meanwhile, was picked for the first time in his career.
During the recent indoor track and field season, Mackay was a two-time second-team All-American (mile and 3,000). Additionally, she was named Female Athlete of the Year by the United States Athletic and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). At the conference level, Mackay broke the championship meet record in the 800 m and anchored the medley relay team in first place.
Schaffer won his second straight men’s indoor mile and anchored the conference-record-breaking DMR men’s team. During the indoor season, he broke the four-minute mile mark three times. His best time of 3:57.42 ranked No. 39 in the nation at the NCAA Division I level.
Both Schaffer and Mackay have been named to the 2021-2222 America East Academic Indoor Track and Field Team.
Since Binghamton joined the America East Conference in 2001, the Bearcats have posted 47 Sport Scholar-Athletes.
