Meet The Virtual, Animated Camgirl The Internet’s Most Toxic Men Are Obsessed With

Projekt Melody has a lot of fans who despise IRL women.

Waifu guys

Earlier this month, an anime-inspired virtual avatar named Melody began hosting sexually explicit live streams – a comic book recreation of how many adult performers and sex workers make money in line.

Since, Wired reports that Projekt Melody has amassed nearly 20,000 excited fans on adult streaming site Chaturbate and has an even larger following on social media. While some of those followers may be getting fired up in general, Projekt Melody has drawn in from unsavory corners of the internet — and fans of the digital stripper meanwhile are posting hateful things about real women live.

A significant part of Projekt Melody are incels: a virulently misogynistic subculture of men who believe that women owe them sexual favors as a birthright.

For this community, Projekt Melody is a glimpse of a techno-utopian future. It is one where women are replaced by digital entities existing explicitly and exclusively for their sexual pleasure. And now the incels are turning to social media, Wired reports, to happily hit and harass women who aren’t as eager for that future.

While it’s hard to imagine a future where digital avatars like Projekt Melody replace human sex workers, it’s likely that Melody – and an inevitable series of imitators – will become increasingly mainstream in the future.

“She appeals to many different groups [including] online communities that lean politically to the right. While this depiction might lead one to assume that his fans are all incels, that’s not really true,” a moderator on Projekt Melody’s subreddit told Wired. “Yes, they are a big part of his fan base.”
