Avani Institute of Design Hosts Metaplay Workshop on Using Emerging Technologies in the AEC Industry

Avani Institute of Design in collaboration with Design Future Foundation (DFF), USA, and DEZACT, London, organizes an online design workshop, “MetaPlay”, which explores the potential for using emerging technologies such as parametric design and modeling tools and augmented/virtual reality. Reality tools to explore and rethink the design of the built environment using digital media.

This six-day workshop will function as a micro design studio that will impart practical skills in numerical and parametric modeling as well as skills in the use of state-of-the-art interactive virtual reality tools (UNREAL engine) within the AEC industry. . Participants will have the opportunity to collaboratively learn and apply these skills to design and build architectural-scale projects in a virtual environment.

Since the pandemic, the pedagogy of Avani’s architecture studio has endeavored to use the challenges of the pandemic as an opportunity to explore the potential of virtual platforms such as Game/VR/AR for architecture and the design. During these two years, a dedicated studio team led by Ar. Vineeth TK, Ar. Athira Balakrishnan, Ar. Mithun Basil and Dr. Soumini Raja have systematically studied and contributed to the discourse on the role of architecture in the metaverse .

As Avani Institute of Design Director Ar. Tony Joseph explains, “We strongly believe that early exposure to next-generation digital technology is mandatory for architects of the future. Digital technologies not only make design more efficient, they unlock the creative and imaginative potential of our students. We are pleased that Avani is able to bring these technologies together with domain experts like DFF and DEZACT. The workshop, an offshoot of the studio’s pedagogy, brings together Avani, DFF and DEZACT to deepen this exploration, aiming to understand the tools and processes of parametric design. The workshop aims to provide the student community with hands-on exposure to digital visualization and creating immersive experiences for architectural spaces in AR and VR, as well as a practical guide to end-to-end workflow, design to production via digital technologies.
